“Meditations 5…”

I found out today in the gym – that the gym is the best teacher for becoming a good, solid human being. Whether anyone thinks so or not – the gym develops and strengthens these characteristics – Perseverance, will-power, discipline, courage, work ethic and a tougher mind.

Those 6 traits translate into real life and it is ingrained in a person’s mind. They carry those traits and it helps with struggle or pain and adversity that a person may be going through. The beautiful thing is – I realize that because I am going through it now. The gym is much more than just becoming fit and getting healthier. So much more. It is a spiritual practice for me. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I do feel that it is so from my experience of being in the gym.

Today was my second day of going to the gym. I haven’t worked out in a little more than 4 months since being in the hospital. I gained 40 pounds from the hospital food, which was actually kind of good. I weigh about 180 pounds compared to 155… Track star physique compared to now, hopeful runningback for ESU.

As I looked in the mirror, I got ready to squat. I thought to myself, this is isn’t too bad. Although, I look different – this look fits me. I am optimistic. I am also blessed because I get to do what I love for as long as I want. I can write and workout. I am healthy. Positive thoughts running like water through a creek. I go for my squats – now I just have to turn this into pure muscle, I got time.

When you are in a gym with other men and women, you realize that there are a lot of other upstanding humans. Working on being better. Working through challenges. The gym is a double teacher. A teacher for your mind and your values and a teacher for your health and physique.
